5 Minutes for Mama: Healthy Eating

May 19, 2017 Kidz at Heart Admin

We all know that when you have kids, taking time to take care of yourself as a mama isn't always a major priority. That's why we've decided to create the 5 Minutes for Mama series. Each week we'll give you five tips that will take less than 5 minutes to do on how you can look after yourself as a mother so that you can be your best self for your family. There will be a different theme for each week. This week's theme is Healthy Eating.

1. Take your vitamins + a liquid probiotic.
If you're making sure that your body is full of all the right nutrients, you'll have a better immune system and will have more energy. We suggest you take a liquid probiotic (try this one!) because gut health is SUPER important for your overall wellbeing.

2. Freeze smoothie bags for quick smoothies each morning.
Why not cut up all your fruit and veggies at the beginning of the week and put them in freezer bags? Then all your ingredients will be ready to blitz quickly each morning. Our  favourite smoothie recipe at the moment is this:

  • one banana
  • a spoon of nut butter
  • a spoon of probiotic
  • a spoon of chia seeds
  • coconut shavings
  • a drop of vanilla extract
  • almond milk

3. Steam your greens in the microwave!
Put your greens (we suggest tender stem broccoli, fresh asparagus or zucchini noodles) in a covered microwavable dish with a tablespoon of water into the microwave for 2 and a half minutes to steam them to perfection. It is so much quicker than using your stove top.

4. Keep healthy snacks in your handbag for you + your kiddo.
We suggest a few pieces of fruit, some nuts and maybe some baby carrots. It'll save you time and trouble when you're out and about and you and your kid start feeling hangry.

5. Spend 5 minutes planning tomorrow's meals.
The old adage, "Those who fail to plan, plan to fail" is so suitable when it comes to healthy eating. That's why we suggest spending a few minutes after dinner planning the next day's meals so you don't end up eating your kid's left over coco pops and mac and cheese. As long as you have a well-stocked fridge, nightly meal planning works perfectly.

Let us know some of your favourite healthy eating tips.
